Fly Tying

Increase your fly fishing enjoyment by fishing with your own crafted flies.
BEGINNING FLY TYING
The Beginning Fly Tying class is open to all CFFU members and is usually given twice a year, February/March and August/September. Classes are limited to six students. The classes are held for two evenings from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., in the Reading Room at the Northminster Presbyterian Church, which is located at 3235 Pope Ave in Sacramento.  CFFU provides the vises, tools, and all materials for the class.  Cost of the two classes is $15.00 per student and covers the cost of the renting the classroom. 
 
During the classes you will learn the basics of fly tying, including techniques, tools, hooks, and thread. You will also tie basic types of flies (nymphs and dry)

INTERMEDIATE FLY TYING CLASSES
Intermediate classes are offered periodically throughout the year. Keep your eye on the calendar or listserve for more information.

FLY TYING EXCHANGE
The Fly Tying Exchange provides an opportunity for members to practice their tying skills and share their flies with other tiers.  Another benefit is the chance to win a gift certificate to a local fly shop. 

Each month members submit one dozen samples of the same fly, along with the written recipe of the fly and any comments they wish to provide.  The club will take two of the flies to be sold in fly boxes at the annual dinner.  One additional fly is kept to be photographed and archived on the CFFU webpage.  The remaining flies are then distributed among the participants for that month. Each contributor will receive flies from all the other contributors, but none of their own.

FLY TYING DEMO AT MEETINGS
Attend Tech Thursday meetings or arrive by 6:15 p.m. at the monthly meetings.
     This is a great way to get information and find other ways to do a certain technique if you already tie, and if you do not, perhaps this may inspire you to get started in the fine art of fly tying.
     The featured Demo "Fly Tyer of the Month" chooses the fly to tie, and shares with the general membership how the fly is tied, with what materials, and any other related topic such as quality and substitutions of materials, when and where to fish the pattern and any other vital tips that make this pattern the pattern of choice.
