California Fly Fishers Unlimited offers a series of programs each year on the "technical" aspects of fly fishing. Tech Services is meant to benefit fly fishers of all levels of experience.

In addition to the Tech Thursday program, various half- and full-day clinics are also held throughout the year. The purpose of these longer clinics is to provide the members with an opportunity to learn in greater depth from a notable expert in the field. Often these clinics are offered to the membership at a substantial discount when compared to the cost of the same level of instruction from outside sources.  Be sure you check out the OTTERS page, too.

All CFFU members are encouraged to attend and participate in the Tech Services Program, no matter how long they have been fly fishing, for there is always something new to learn. You can look forward to participating in the program this year.

As a complement to Technical Services, the Coachman Program provides a structured set of goals for new and experienced fly fishers to achieve. Members participating in the Coachman Program must master a series of required and elective topics over the course of a year. Upon completion of the Coachman Program, a member will have a firm grasp of fly fishing fundamentals and their accomplishment will be acknowledged by the membership as a whole.

2012 Technical Services Director

WHEN:   Class I - Tuesday, January 24, 26, 31, Feb 2 -  6:30 - 9:30 p.m., 4 sessions over 2  weeks

Tired of paying two bucks for a fly you are going to lose in a tree? Want to fill your fly box with those popular patterns that you cannot find in the fly shops? Interested in advancing your knowledge of fly fishing to the next level? Well, now is your chance. In January and February, the CFFU will offer a beginning fly tying class to all members interested in learning the art of tying flies.

The class will cover the fundamentals of fly tying including: tools, materials, basic patterns, and basic tying techniques. You will complete your first fly during the first class, and each session will build on the skills learned in the previous one. By the end of the class you will be exposed to several different patterns, dry flies as well as wets. To cover club costs, there will be a $30 fee per person due at signup. Tools and all materials will be provided by the club. A similar class at the local shops can easily cost twice as much, so this is a real bargain!

The class is designed for beginners as well as members who have not tied it a while and need a refresher (note: signup preference will go to first time students). The class will meet for four sessions over two weeks, and there will be two classes, January and February. The first session will be on Tuesday, January 24th, from 6:30-9:30pm at the Northminster Presbyterian Church Class Room, 3235 Pope Ave., Sacramento . Class size will be limited to the first six members who sign up, and the registration fee is due at time of registration. Registration for the second class will begin after the first class is filled.
