OUTING REPORT
Fall trip on the Lower Sacramento
By Bo Nishimura

The first CFFU Lower Sac Fall trip produced numerous fish landed for most folks. Many reported their best ever day of fishing and catching, with some boats (Dave Earl and Sam Yee) producing reports of up to 60 fish landed. This amount of success despite the dearth of wild, spawning salmon in the river is simply amazing. Normally at this time of year salmon can be found spawning the entire width of the mighty Lower Sac in some spots, but this year nary a spawning fish was to be seen. Let's just hope the run of wild fish is simply late.
On a bright note, the number of steelhead hooked in the river appears to be rising each year, and several CFFU'ers reported landing both hatchery and wild sea-run fish. Ty Espinoza displayed his piscatorial prowess by hooking three, nailing two of them on consecutive casts.
Other members targeted more exotic species, with Bill Ozawa nailing the golden fish "Grand Slam" of suckers, flatheads and squawfish, and Craig McCullough and Tim Landrus cajoling a CFFU dinner prize donation.
But perhaps the best report came in from Chuck Honeycutt and Will Williams. Chuck reports, "Our guide "Popeye" (Dennis Franco) was excellent and made the day very enjoyable. He had an 8hp motor on his boat that probably saved the day --- and definitely saved a pair of sun glasses. Will was great to fish with and provided the highlight of the day. He dropped his "Maui Jim" sun glasses and I thought for sure that they were not to be seen again. Anyway, we fished our drift down the river caught a couple of fish - drifted at least 1/3 mile - then turned the motor on and --- miracle of miracles --- we found the sun glasses in 3 to 4 feet of water. After trying to "net" the sun glasses, Will took off his shorts and jumped into the river. He literally had to go completely under the water to retrieve the sun glasses ---- but he managed to find them! Fortunately, the sun was up and the day was warm ---- and Will's clothes dried out in a couple of hours." Will replied, "That water was cold too!!" I finally have a photo I can use for my blog, The Naked FlyFisherman.
