FISH DERBY AT MATHER REGIONAL PARK

CFFU Logo

OF SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA

The day officially begins at 9:00 a.m. as the guests arrive and are registered, outfitted with a pole and worms (some bring their own), then matched up with a CFFU fishing guide and off they go to the pond to begin fishing. Groups of participants surround our corner of the lake, and the CFFU volunteers rotate around making sure each person has help if they need it. Each fish caught is measured, recorded and photographed along with the person who caught it.   Again this year each of the guests received a photo, too.  At the end of the day, the Kiwanis Club gathers them all together and awards prizes. The prizes are a big hit.

A high point of the day is LUNCH! Every year the Kiwanis Club furnishes lunch for everyone at the Fish Derby. They stoke up the barbeque and unpack the many bags of food, we all help to set up the tables and serve. The lines are usually quite long because everyone is ready for a barbequed hot dog, their choice of their favorite chips, a cookie, and a soda.

The event would not be a success without the  help of the following:

2004 Award Winning Event!

CFFU assists with one of the Sacramento County community service activities, the  Fish Derby held annually for the mentally and physically challenged people from Sacramento County .

For many of the people of all ages who participate in the fishing derby, this is the only time of the year when they get out to fish and actually catch a fish. The pond is usually stocked before the event. Many of the fish are very small, but it doesn't matter. The smiles are huge and the excitement is contagious when someone catches a fish at this event. The participants are escorted to the derby by caregivers, families or friends, and in some cases this is the only activity they do with their family .

CFFU was chosen to receive an award by the County of Sacramento and the Sacramento Association for the Retarded for a Community Service Award!  Many of us have been active in this event.  Congratulations to  all who have ever assisted. Thank you all!
