Report of CFFU's 2010 Annual Dinner The November 6, 2010 CFFU Annual Dinner and Fund Raiser was another success. Bob and I were very glad to have CFFU members who volunteered their time and effort, especially Gregory Shaffer who entertained us as Emcee and Auctioneer. The doors opened at 4:30 and guests arrived. The real work began a couple months before when Dinner Chairs Bob and Phoebe Larne started the preparations by asking for donations. The event was held at the Carmichael Elk's Club on Cypress Avenue in Carmichael. Again this year we had a huge room with plenty of space to display all of the many donated and purchased raffle and auction items. The items had previously been logged in by Bob & Phoebe Larne, and Bob Effa. At the dinner, Bob Effa manned the computer during the event to process the data with help from Arthur Herron. The Silent Auction was managed by Lucy Badenhoop, making sure everything was bagged and picked up. This year we had a great variety of items and two Raffle Boards, one with a Galvan Reel, the other with a Fish Cat 4. Both the raffle and auction included a good number of rods and reels, flies and line. John and Earlene Coldiron greeted guests as they entered the event and made sure everyone had their badge and bidder number. Guests crowded around the table set under the CFFU Pop-Up where Keith and Betty Pfeifer and their committee sold hundreds of Raffle Tickets. Guests then proceeded to check out the huge number of interesting items that would be auctioned and raffled off later in the evening. Many guests chose to take their chance on a Raffle Bucket Item. Pots of live Cyclamen decorated the tables with their cheerful pink flowers and the pots wrapped in green cellophane by Beth Ison. The flowers and a package of flies were given away as door prizes after dinner. CFFU furnished appetizer trays of cheese, crackers and veggies prior to the dinner, which helped to stave off our hunger. Gregory began the program with a thank you to all of the volunteers who made the dinner possible. He then introduced our special guests from American Fly Fishing, Fly Fishing Specialties, and Keine's. Dinner was served at 6 p.m., with entree choices of either baked chicken breast or London Broil. Dinner was completed with slice of cheesecake. AWARDS - As soon as most people had finished their dinner Gregory introduced current CFFU President, Bob Larne. Bob presented awards to very deserving CFFU Members as follows: Outstanding Board Member, Rich Wilson; Outstanding Member, Tim Au-Young; and President's Awards to Gary Howard, Jim Berdan, and John Daniels. These awards will be added to the beautiful CFFU Perpetual Award Board that was made by Gary Howard two years ago and will be displayed at each general CFFU meeting. The “Wettest Fly Award” was to Russ Heckley. along with a limerick penned by Gregory Shaffer. Gregroy Shaffer was presented with his 2009 and 2010 President Pins. Next on the Program Gregory performed the Live Auction with help from volunteers to make sure all bids were counted.
It seemed like the evening had just begun when it was suddenly over. It was time for everyone to line up and pay. Jim Berdan and his one lonely volunteer, Bob Bettati, attempted to keep up with the line, but unfortunately many guests had to wait to pay. We'll try to do better next year. Items were collected from the Pick-Up talbe, guests turned in their name tags and said goodnight. Again this year CFFU had a "3-phase silent auction". Each of the 3 phases closed at a different time, which did a great job of focusing the bidding on all of those items. It also gave our data person, Bob Effa, more time to enter the bids into the computer. Each phase of the Silent Auction was identified by colored balloons and same color tablecloth runners. Each closing was announced by emcee Gregory Shaffer which allowed bidders to check their bids. Lucy Badenhoop and her crew then went to work bagging the items for pick up. The Raffle Board for the Galvan Reel filled up and the winner drawn, Harry Moos. The Raffle Board for the Fish Cat 4 was short a half dozen squares being filled, but we later drew the winner for that one too, with Jerome Marek being the lucky new owner of a FishCat 4. Past President's of CFFU were introduced and a photo taken just before dinner was served. |
