OF SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA
About CFFU -
Founded in 1962, California Fly Fishers Unlimited is the oldest fly fishing club in the Sacramento area. CFFU is a nonprofit, community based organization serving the Sacramento area and norther California.
We are dedicated to promoting awareness and participation in the art of fly fishing; and promoting the conservation, preservation, and enhancement of our fishery resources. The California Coachman is the "official fly" of CFFU.
Our Affiliations -
As a leader in conservation and fly fishing, CFFU is a founding member of the Federation of Fly Fishers and the Northern California Council of the Federation. CFFU also supports, and is a member of: The Nature Conservancey, the California Sport Fishing Protection Alliance (CSPA), and Cal Trout. Locally, CFFU members serve on the board of Save the American River Association (SARA).
A Scholarship Fund -
Through the Bob Bittner Memorial Scholarship Fund, CFFU annually grants a scholarship to a University of California at Davis student majoring in fisheries biology. CFFU members help support the scholarship fund by their attendance and generous donations at the annual CFFU Dinner. The 2012 dinner will be held Saturday, November 3, 2012.
Many Activities -
Club activities include: Monthly meetings with programs featuring special guest speakers who present fly fishing techniques and destinations, monthly club fishing outings to various fisheries in Northern California, Nevada and Oregon, Tech Thursdays every month where the technical aspects of fly fishing such as casting, fly tying, knot tying, and leader construction is discussed, demonstrated, and practiced.
Our Monthly Newsletter -
The club's newsletter, On the Fly is published monthly and sent to those members who don't subscribe to read it online. On The Fly contains articles and information on fly fishing, conservation, and club activities and is designed to enrich and enhance the members appreciation and enjoyment of the sport.
We Fly Fish -
Our club members are a diverse group of fly fishers represented from beginners to experts. CFFU members fish from Alaska and British Columbia to Belize and Patagonia and from Christmas Island to New Zealand. We also spend considerable time right in our own back yard, fishing the American River for Salmon, Steelhead, trout, and shad. We fish local lakes and reservoirs for warmwater species such as smallmouth and largemouth bass and we fish the Sacramento River delta for striped bass.
In addition to our Monthly Outings, there are often weekly outings to various nearby places.

Conservation -
As a club, we value the protection of our native fish and support the policy "catch and release". We are also active and participate in local conservation projects such as Creek Week and the Great American River Clean Up. Our Director of Conservation Policy, with help and assistance from other members, monitors local, statewide, and regional legislation that has an impact on our limited natural resources. We also monitor and provide comments on other issues such as proposed changes to existing fishing regulations and modifications to suction dredging rules. Our participation on the board of the Save the American River Association gives our club the opportunity to protect and help shape the future of the lower American River. Our "Salmon/Steelhead in the classroom Program" gives school children the opportunity to raise salmon or steelhead eggs in an aquarium environment.
Proctor Award -
Do you want to win $150.00 gift certificate to the fly shop of your choice, and a plaque for catching the biggest fish? Submit your anadromous or salt water fish for this award, and let the Proctor Chair figure out if you qualify!
CFFU will select one winner each quarter, four awards a year! Be sure to submit your fish for consideration. You will want to read the rules first and you can find them by clicking on the link below. Then be sure to print out a copy of the application so you can fill it in and mail it to apply.
The Proctor Award was established in honor of Jack Proctor, a long time member of California Fly Fishers Unlimited. From all accounts, Mr. Proctor was an excellent angler and a wonderful gentleman.
In the year 2002, a letter was written to the then President, Gerald Kilbert, from Neil Hansen who explained the concept behind the Proctor Award. Mr. Hansen wrote that he and Ben Hammond, who passed away in 2001, and several others close to Jack Proctor pushed the idea of the Proctor award to honor Jack. The general concept was, "Any species that qualified as anadromous (migrating up rivers from the sea to breed in fresh water, as salmon do) or salt water was to be considered. The fish's weight was to be compared to the International Game Fish Association (IGFA) world record weight for the same species. The fish that weighed the most, in relation to the record fish of the same species would win."
Mr. Hansen gave this example "If the IGFA fly caught record for a Tarpon was 200 pounds and an entrant submitted a Tarpon of 100 pounds, it would weigh 50% of the record fish. If another entrant caught a 35 pound Striped Bass and the IGFA record was 63 pounds, the Striped Bass would weigh 56% of the IGFA record fish and be judged the award fish. A 6 pound Shad might beat a 20 pound Permit. The idea was to even things out since not everyone could afford Florida, Alaska or Belize."
People who could not, or did not want to travel to far away places in search of anadromous fish could compete with fish caught in the Sacramento area. The eligible fish would include Salmon, Shad and Striped Bass.
The original rules cannot be found. In spite of announcements at various times and the publication of the award in the newsletter, most CFFU members do not know about the award and are not familiar with the IGFA rules. Rarely has a member submitted a fish for consideration. The last recipient was probably in the year 2000. Therefore, we are modifying the previous rules with hope of greater CFFU participation in honor of Jack Proctor. The new rules are effective October 2011
