OF SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA

CFFU OUTING

BAUM LAKE is located about an hour out of Redding, CA and approximately a four hour drive from the Sacramento area. The elevation is near 3400 feet so weather can vary from warm sunny to cold and snowy.  Be prepared for whatever may come.  It is known as one of the best winter fisheries in the State. It is near the town of Burney, CA, where there are plenty of places to stay, restaurants for meals and shopping for the essentials.  Baum Lake has easy access from shore and a shallow boat ramp for small boats or float tubes.  Fish up to 20 inches are not uncommon.  It is stocked with brown, rainbow and Eagle Lake Trout.

OUTING REPORT
By Gary Crotwell
For ten days we watched the weather reports and anxiously waited to go to
Baum Lake located about an hour east of Redding. For the entire ten days we were told by the national weather service that we had a 50% chance of showers or rain on both days. Well? We not only did not see any rain but it was sunny and bright all day long both days. We really wanted some cloud cover or light rain to help the "Blue Wing Olive" hatch but it was not to happen, only sunshine. Arguably you couldn't knock the weather, sunny in the low 50's and no wind to speak of. So eight of the brave souls who all came with rain and cold weather gear shed the heavy layers and began fishing. Everyone attending caught fish and a few caught a lot of fish. Most were the 15-16 inch brown and rainbows planted by DFG in January. Howard Ross tells of a 22 to 24 inch rainbow caught way down the lake where there was no one to confirm and he didn't have his camera. (I believe him!) There were a lot of fish in the lake, no one knows what would have happened if the clouds and rain would have been there to help out. But all in all it was a great trip. We are already beginning to plan next years trip, you don't want to miss it. That is unless it's snowing like crazy and the roads are closed. Only the hard core fishers will be willing to take that on!
Those in attendance were: Howard Ross, Gary Eastman, Keith Pfeifer, Randy Burt, Robert Roth, John Daniels, Erik Blihovde, and Gary Crotwell.
Please feel free to talk to any of them about the trip, I'm sure they will be glad to tell you all about it.
